How to get started...

Hi

what is the best way to get started ?
(Please be gentle as I'm a novice linux user)

Here is my goal:

Have a server where I can host 4-5 of my small websites and a few of my friends

So far I have done this:
I have bought a domain name at name.com xxxx.cloud
I have a VPS here, I renamed the hostname to web001.xxxx.cloud
on Name.com I made A record xxxx.cloud pointing to the IP at my VPS
on Name.com I made CNAME record web001.xxxx.cloud pointing to the IP at my VPS
on Name.com I made CNAME record ftp.xxxx.cloud pointing to the IP at my VPS
on Name.com I made CNAME record www.xxxx.cloud pointing to the IP at my VPS
on Name.com I made CNAME record mail.xxxx.cloud pointing to the IP at my VPS
on Name.com I made MX record mail.xxxx.cloud pointing to the IP at my VPS

I have installed ISPConfig using an automated installation script (Found it in the homepage of ISPConfig)
then as admin, i added my xxxx.cloud domain as site and mail, created a mailbox

but... I cannot send or receive any mails using the webmail (Roundcube), when I hit 'Send' I simply get the 'Sending mail....' flash messages in the lower right corner, and then after a while it disappears

What can I have missed?
Is there a better way to achieve my goal ?

Thanks in advance

Kind regrads
Steen

  • Hey @rabol,

I understand that the main question here is about the mail. Make sure that your domain has a correct A record for "mail.xxxx.cloud" as it seems you are using it for MX and it is supposed to be your mail server.

Another thing, make sure to check if your mail service is running, you can do it by checking its status via SSH or ISPConfig.

Finally, you can always check your mail logs to see what has happened with the email.
